Isn't it Ironic

The food stamp program, is pleased to be distributing the greatest amount of food stamps ever.

The Park Service, asks us to "please do not feed the animals" because the animals may grow dependent and not learn to take care of themselves.

Perspective on Spending

One Hundred Dollars

$100 - the Most counterfeited money denomination in the world. Keeps the world moving.

Ten Thousand Dollars

$10,000 - Enough for a great vacation or to buy a used car.
Approximately one year of work for the average human on earth.

One Million Dollars

$1,000,000 - Not as big of a pile as you thought, eh?
Still this is 92 years worth of work for the average human on earth..

One Hundred Million Dollars

$100,000,000 - Plenty to go around for everyone.
Fits nicely on an ISO / Military standard sized wooden pallet.

One Billion Dollars

$1,000,000,000 - You will need some help when robbing the bank.
Now we are getting to some serious money!

One Trillion Dollars

$1,000,000,000,000

When the U.S government speaks about a 1.7 trillion deficit - this is the volume
of cash that was borrowed in 2010 to run things.
Keep in mind it is made of double stacked pallets of $100 million dollars each, full of $100 dollar bills.
You are going to need a lot of trucks to freight this around.

If you spent $1 million a day since Jesus was born, you would have not spent $1 trillion by now, but ~$700 billion

One Trillion Dollars

the same amount the banks got during the 2008 bailout.

Comparison of $1,000,000,000,000 dollars to a standard-sized American Football field
and a European Football field.
Say hello to the Boeing 747-400 transcontinental airliner that's hiding on the right.
This was until recently the biggest passenger plane in the world.

15 Trillion Dollars
We are in debt 14.5 Trillion and they talk about cutting 1 trillion that would
not make a dent in this pile.

$15,000,000,000,000 - Unless the U.S. government fixes the budget, US national debt (credit bill)
will top 15 trillion by the end of 2011.

The Statue of Liberty seems rather worried as United States national debt passes 20%
of the entire world's combined GDP (Gross Domestic Product).
In 2011 the National Debt will exceed 100% of GDP, and venture into the
100%+ debt-to-GDP ratio that the bankrupting European nations (PIIGS) have.

114.5 Trillion Dollars

$114,500,000,000,000. - US unfunded liabilities

To the right you can see the pillar of cold hard $100 bills that dwarfs the WTC
and Empire State Building - both at one point world's tallest buildings.
If you look carefully you can see the Statue of Liberty.

The 114.5 Trillion dollar super-skyscraper is the amount of money the U.S. Government knows
it does not have to fully fund Medicare, the Medicare Prescription Drug Program,
Social Security + Military and civil servant pensions.
It is the money the USA knows it will not have to pay all its bills.
If you live in USA this is also your personal credit card bill.
You are responsible along with everyone else to pay this back.

The citizens of USA created the U.S. Government to serve them.
This is what the U.S. Government has done while serving the people.
The unfunded liability is calculated on current tax and funding inputs,
and future demographic shifts in US Population.

OORAH!

Finishing up my last semester of graduate school I have found that I am hitting a solid wall. I went and talked to one of my good friends the other night about "my give a damn being busted." I asked him if he would pray with me to ask God help me to "give a damn again."

I left his house recharged and today I found myself back at that same wall. As I sat at my computer staring at a half written paper I found myself distracted by Facebook.

As a former Marine and currently as an officer in the United States Navy I found the following two videos to motivating me today. They reminded me why I need to give a damn. They reminded me why I signed my name on a dotted line saying that I would defend the United States of America with my very life if need be. They reminded me of my call from God to become a chaplain in the United States Navy.

Enjoy the videos. I hope they strike some cord within you as they did me. To my brothers and sisters who stand in harms way today, and tonight.

Requiescat In Pace

We can sleep in peacefully in our beds tonight because there are men and women who are willing to do violence on our part. We live in a world that has walls and those wall are guarded by men and women who are part of a small percentage who have volunteered to do so. While to some the existence of these men and women is grotesque and incomprehensible, they don't appreciate the peace they have. They live in a world where a multicultural unicorn with a PhD in Diversity and Sensitivity snorts magical pixie dust. Here in reality land, I understand that it is because of these men who use words like honor, loyalty, and esprit d corps. These words form the backbone of a life that is spent defending something. Those who don't understand these words use them as a punchline at parties.

To those who don't understand I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain to someone who rises and sleeps under the blanket of freedom that is provided by valiant men and women why those men and women are necessary. I would rather that such people simply say thank you and go about their day. Otherwise, I suggest that they pick up a weapon and stand a post.

Either way, I don't give a damn what they think they think.

The True Cost of Freedom

"O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!"
